The salty air fills my nostrils as I get out of my car and into this familiar place. I remember times of love, fun, and great times. I sit on a bench and look out onto the water. I hear what Mahler called in his first symphony “Wie ein naturlaut” (Like a sound of nature). The birds chirp, and coo as the children play on the jungle gym. I see fishermen on the pier casting their lines hoping for a great catch. Then I look to where I remember being for a good part of my life. The water it has been around me my whole life. I look onto it and see the sunlight glimmering off the water almost blinding me. I see and hear the sound of motor boats flying by. I look closer and see a fin, then behind it two more. I ponder to myself, where are they going? I watch the fins cut through the water endlessly. This site reminds me of the times of being on a boat and seeing them swim right next to us. Some days you would get luck and see them jump out of the water as you are flying by. As I see this I can’t help but think of the Mahler 1st symphony. I keep humming the first movement to myself. I look up towards the sky and I see that the cumulus clouds seem ready to burst. So I must start heading home, away from nature, and away from such fond memories.

Greetings classmates,
My name is Kenneth Carter and I eat, sleep, and breathe music. I’m a Florida boy, have lived in Port Charlotte for my whole life. Nice town to raise kids, but horribly boring for us. In my high school band I was the Drum major of the 2010-2011 season, I also wrote the warm ups during my year of being Drum major and for this year’s marching season. On top of that I was also the student conductor for the top band of my high school, earned straight superiors in student conducting at district, and conducted in the Central Park Band Shell.
I came to FGCU to study what I love, and when I heard the Wind orchestra here play I was ready to be a part of a growing organization. I’m going to major in Music Education. I’m also a saxophone player who has had the opportunity to play 4 of the 6 saxophones in the family. Right now I play on a Selmer Mark VI. The Mark VI is the best saxophone you can play and I’m so lucky to have one. My goals when I’m out of college are to conduct one of the top United States symphony orchestras, or become a high school band director and spread my love for the art form to others. My all time favorite conductor is Gustavo Dudamel at the L.A. Philharmonic Orchestra, and my favorite composer is Gustav Mahler.
In my free time I love listening, and writing music on a program called finale. On a more serious note my family is very important to me. They have supported me through all my endeavors, including college. Without their help, and support I would not be where I was today and I can never thank them enough for their help. So that’s musical old me!
